Miale Tubana Cooperative Uganda

Miale Tubana Cooperative Uganda

The Miale-Tubana cooperative was founded in 2010 by 40 farmers and has now grown to 65 active members. The cooperative grows the rare Nyasaland coffee variety in diverse agroforestry systems on the slopes of Mount Elgon in eastern Uganda.

The cherries grow at an altitude of 1,200 to 1,600 meters, are usually washed and are characterized by a full body, mild acidity, pleasant sweetness and complex aromas of cassis, panela and black tea, but also spicier notes of nutmeg and coriander.

part of the global Slow Food movement

Since 2015, the Miale-Tubana cooperative has been part of the global Slow Food movement, which is committed to preserving biodiversity, sustainable agriculture and traditional food craftsmanship. The farmers, organized as the Slow Food Presidio, are committed to preserving the Nyasaland Arabica variety, which is threatened with extinction. The plants originate from southwest Ethiopia and have found their way to the Mount Elgon mountains via Nyasaland (now Malawi) and Jamaica.

The Slow Food Coffee Coalition, of which the cooperative has been a member since 2021, enables farmers to exchange knowledge with other like-minded cooperatives in the region, visit each other and develop together. Regular support from Slow Food, agronomists, botanists and roasters helps to promote sustainable cultivation methods and secure coffee cultivation in the long term.
